ABOUT THE DESIGNER

The original logo offered a great symbol for a team with this name for many reasons. The most obvious of which is the symbolic nature of the name being represented. On top is a leaping buffalo, while directly below are sabres. The Red and Black buffalo head logo was a completely new concept, and while visually appealing, the team name was never the Buffalo Buffaloes. The sabres having been totally lost in the new logo, many fans felt this was an odd direction for the team to take. This latest version has not even addressed any of the mistakes made in the past, as well as creating new ones.

The "Buffaslug" has a number of odd creative choices. The first being the lack of the sabres as a design element. The second is the choice to use a yellow buffalo. The white buffalo has a historical and mythological background in both the city of Buffalo, and Native American culture. It is a naturally occurring phenomenon that every million or so buffalo, happen to be born white. Native Americans believe this to be an incarnation of a great buffalo spirit, its arrival marking a great change and rebirth for all ( does this not sound like a great symbol for Buffalo ? ).

On a simply design standpoint, the original logo offered symmetry and balance, all encompassed in a circle. In trying to revamp this image, I felt it was best to retain the two strongest advantages of the original logo, the symmetry and the symbolic nature. Circles are used as symbols to convey perfection, and here I have chosen to "break" the circle with the sabres to connote an imperfection, which acts as a great metaphor for hockey, Buffalo, sports and life ... all of which are imperfect but through hard work, talent and dedication you strive to create something close to perfect.

For the secondary mark, I chose to stick with the concept of using a B with a sabre though it. It also serves as a very strong conceptual piece. But again, I saw the execution lacking, and now had an oppurtunity to allude to the history of hockey in Buffalo. The B in this mark is a revamped version of that once seen on the old Buffalo Bisons bottlecap logo. It serves as a reminder and an homage to the team that made it possible for this team to ever even exist.

This area of this project will be expanding and changing from time to time. I am constantly getting feedback, new ideas, and refining concepts, and these changes will be dumped in here occasionally.
