Buffalo Sabres March, 2003

This is a series of concepts created for the new ownership of the Buffalo Sabres. The concept is basically, a return to the original blue and gold scheme, with modifications to a more 'serious' take on the colors. The rationale being to retain the blue and gold tradition, but attract / keep the current young market. ( note: the color scheme may appear differently on your monitor, as each persons brightness settings differ. please trust, that the color meant for display is a dark navy blue, and not a black. The closest example of the Blue, currently in practice that I can offer is the NY Rangers and Edmonton Oilers Alternate Jerseys )

Making the change to blue and gold now offers a two fold advantage, as now we can visually "erase" the Rigas era, but while still progressing forward with a new revitalized image and identity. It is my belief that the Red and Black scheme was hastily chosen, and was a decision made based on sales statistics and trends of the market, rather than keeping true to what is best for Buffalo, and its fans. There are currently five (5) teams with Red and Black as their color scheme, while there are thirteen (13) teams with Red as part of their colors. This no doubt, is based on merchandise sales statistics. In straying from the current Red and Black color scheme, we would be distancing ourselves from many other teams with similar styles, and offering a nostalgic return for many fans. This scheme retains a sense of history with this club, while still representing a new, modernized team.

Furthermore, many professional teams in various sports have ditched thier recent logo/jersey redesigns in favor of their "original" logos, in hopes to regain their most loyal fans. In the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders have done this, while, in the NBA, the Seattle Supersonics, Detroit Pistons, and Los Angeles Clippers have also returned to original styles. In the MLB, they hosted a Retro Week, where each team wore a throwback version of their jerseys and logos, the NFL did the same thing a few years back. This is not just niche marketing anymore, it has become mainstream, where fans wish to sport not just their loyalty to their teams, but their sense of tradition and history also.

Please, keep in mind the designs contained in this proposal are not final designs. This proposal is meant as the first step towards a new design for the Sabres Organization, and none of these are to be assumed to be final, finished designs. Every design is a process, and hopefully we can move forward from this first step.
